The Town of Brattleboro has a permanent population of around 12,000 to 13,000 with a daytime population much higher. Responsibility for fire protection falls on the Brattleboro Fire Department. With this, the Fire Chief is charged with determining the cause of fires within the department's jurisdiction.
The department currently has three full time members who are trainined to perform fire investigations. These members have hundreds of hours of training in the areas of origin and cause determination, vehicle fires, interviews, evidence collection, fire scene photography, electrical fire investigations, wildland fire investigations, investigative record keeping, court procedures and more. As technology advances, constant training is required to ensure investigators are knowledgeable so accurate investigations are preformed.
When Criminal activity is suspected, the members of the Brattleboro Fire Department's Fire Investigation Team work closely with members of the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Team and investigators from the Department of Public Safety's Division of Fire Safety.
